Where the number 42 comes from
The phrase "the 42 Laws of Ma'at" is a modern one. It usually refers to the 42 declarations of innocence associated with ancient Egyptian funerary literature — the spells often collected today under the title Book of Going Forth by Day, popularly the Book of the Dead. Those declarations were addressed to divine assessors in a specific ritual setting, and the wording, order, and number vary between surviving papyri.
Careful: No single modern list is the historically correct version. What follows is an ethical framework inspired by those declarations, not a translation of them.
3. I WILL NOT ACT WITH VIOLENCE
The same action can come from generosity or from hunger for approval.
"I act from clarity, not from hunger."
